THE LEGEND OF JAMBUPATI

King Jambupati was a very boastful and arrogant ruler. He had been in power for many years and during that time, he had been using his authority to oppress and exploit his subjects. He imposed heavy taxes on his people, and those who couldn’t pay were thrown into prison or forced into labour. He also seized land and property from the poor and gave them to his wealthy friends and supporters. His cruelty and injustice were well-known throughout the kingdom, and many of his subjects lived in fear and poverty.

Despite his actions, King Jambupati believed that he was the best ruler, and that no one could challenge his power. He believed that he was superior to all other creatures, and that he had the right to do as he pleased.

The Buddha, who had heard of the King’s actions, decided to intervene. The Buddha asked Jambupati to stop being evil and practice kindness instead, but Jambupati would not listen.

But the Buddha, being a master of wisdom and compassion, realised that the King would not change his mind, the Buddha set about to humble him.

The Buddha magically created a royal crown and exquisite jewels for himself. He built himself a stunning palace beyond compare. Then he appeared in front of Jambupati dressed in royal robes even more beautiful than the King’s.

King Jambupati was shocked and became humbled. He saw that the glory of Enlightenment is far greater than that of simple earthly kingship. He agreed to change his ways. He submitted to the Dhamma, becoming a monk.
